Marian Retreat - Mary in your home
Stay Safe online
With social isolation laws now in full force around the country, many peoples’ online activities are increasing, especially minors and vulnerable persons. These activities can be for education, social, spiritual, pastoral, community or even entertainment.
The Maronite Eparchy of Australia confirms its commitment to the e-Safety of minors and vulnerable persons during the COVID-19 pandemic social isolation period.
We are forever grateful for the contemporary tools of communication that enable us to keep up the momentum. However, as with anything, there are risks associated with these activities.
eSafety's research shows one in four young people in Australia have been contacted by someone they don’t know online. Usually, this is harmless, but at times it can be inappropriate or unsafe.
It is important to remember that inappropriate or unsafe contact can also come from someone the child or young person knows, and they may even welcome the contact at first.
The Australian e-Safety Commission has issued many tools and resources to help us keep our children safe during this social isolation period:
- COVID-19: an online safety kit for parents and carers
- COVID-19: Advice for parents
- COVID-19: Protecting children from online abuse
You may refer to the e-Safety Commissioner Website for more information regarding e-Safety.
The worst danger is that the person who makes contact will 'groom' a child to sexually abuse them. This abuse can happen, not only in a physical meeting, but it increasingly occurs online. Given the current circumstances, cyberbullies and abusers can take advantage of the excessive use of electronic tools of communication to trick minors and vulnerable persons, and possibly persuaded into sexual or other unethical activity on webcams or into sending or posting sexual images, jokes, etc.
May God bless you and keep you and members of your families safe.
