In the Beginning...

The choir came about to support the English Youth Mass on Sunday nights as far back as 1984. Like any choir, its function is to lead the congregation in prayer... and singing is very important part of prayer.

Joining the Choir

Everyone in the choir would agree that it’s greatly satisfying to be part of a group that makes youth mass so enjoyable. It is more than singing a song or two ?it’s about singing that encourages, motivates and invites all the congregation to join in celebrating the mass.

Practice

The choir rehearses every Sunday both before and after mass, primarily to review hymns for the mass. For special occasions thought, rehearses are organized and scheduled throughout the working week, It is not only an opportunity to brush up on singing techniques and harmonies, but to learn a variety of new material.

Hymn Selection

While the hymns for the mass are usually selected by Emma, the Choir as a whole will often help in the process, offering creative suggestion. The hymns chosen are based on their relevance to the gospel, a particular feast day, or the Church season.

Males and Females

For the fullest and richest tones, the choir works best when there are both males and females singing. They are grouped separately for clearer choir sound, vocal ranges and harmonies.

Rock Mass

The Rock Mass is a terrific opportunity to do something a little different with the Church hymns. While you won’t hear any Pop Music or Hard Rock, you will certainly be impressed with stylised rock arrangements of mass parts and hymns. With the help of the Wehbe-Bechara Band, it has definitely made its mark, packing congregations to the rafters. But, as any choir member will tell you, the rock mass requires 200% effort, and always attracts a large number of people volunteering to be part of the choir.

Rock masses are usually held on an important day of the Church Calendar to mark the event.
